By the end of my leave, I find myself reluctant to go. Ellen is too important for me to treat this like a casual hookup.

I’m in love with the girl.

I debate with myself what to do, but I can only see one solution if I want to keep her in my life without compromising my career.

I enter the bar, dressed in my Army service uniform, and walk straight up to her. She looks distraught. “It’s not time yet, is it? Don’t you have a few more days?”

“I do,” I answer, holding my arm out to her. “Would you care to come with me?”

She shakes her head, smiling. “What’s this about? I still have five hours on my shift.”

I nod to Arnold. “I okayed it with the boss.”

She looks over to him and he nods. Wrapping her arm around mine, she giggles. “I must be dreaming. A handsome man in uniform is asking me to leave work on a date? Pinch me now.”

I lead her out and take pleasure in her squeal. “A limo? Oh my… I really am dreaming.”

I open the door for her. “Your chariot awaits.”

“Oh, Charles, I can’t believe this,” she gushes as she gets inside.

I have already instructed the driver where to go. I want to share a special place with her. One that no one else knows about, except my brother, Jacob.

The ride takes nearly forty-five minutes from the bar. That whole time, Ellen is bouncing from seat to seat, wanting to take it all in. “It’s so big!”

“That’s what she said.”

Ellen looks at me and then bursts out laughing, moving back over to me to give me a hug and a kiss. “You’re my dream come true, Charles Walker.”

I take her hand and kiss it, anxious to reach our destination.

The driver takes us up to the summit of the hilltop and pulls to the side of the road. I exit the vehicle and help her out. “This is the place I used to go to as a kid,” I explain.

“All the way up here?”

“Yeah, it made for a challenging bicycle ride as a kid, but I liked the view.”

“It is impressive,” she agrees, looking at our town and the great expanse of plains beyond it.

“Seeing my world from this view opened my mind to the possibility of life beyond this place, beyond my father’s expectations. Once I was set free of those boundaries, I realized I could dream as big as I wanted. It was when I allowed myself to imagine a future without limits, that I had my vision. This exact spot,” I point to the ground, “is where I knew I was meant to be part of the Army.”

Ellen hugs herself against me. “You were extraordinary, even as a kid.”

“I say all this, so you can understand how important my future plans are.”

“I know, Charles.”

“However, coming back here made me realize I’ve left out an important part of my life.”

She looks up into my eyes. “What’s that?”

“You.” I pull her to me and whisper in her ear before I kiss her deeply.
